I Wrote in 13 Very Different Publications for 30 Days
October was my third full month on Medium.
However, I would like to call it my first because it was the first time I actually wrote and published seriously. In August, I published more, however, most of the stuff was articles lying around on my hard drive since last year.

I did not actually write for Medium specifically.
I did not feel like a writer. Therefore I decided to give my all for this month.
I started October with 5 goals:
- Publish 13–15 articles in different publications.
- Try to get into big publications.
- Write every day.
- Raise followers by 30–40.
- Earn in double digits.
This is how it went:
- Published 16 articles.
- I was able to get into Better Humans, The Ascent, Better Marketing, and The Writing Cooperative.
- I wrote daily.
- I gained 100+ followers.
- Earned my first 22 dollars.
1. Publishing in small publications is okay
Before this experiment, I thought that there was no sense in publishing with a small channel that has less than 50k followers.
In my October experiment, I submitted to all sorts of publications.
To my surprise, I got a great response and followers from those stories. In particular, for my short story that was rejected by PSILY and got published in Blue insights, I got such heartwarming responses that I almost cried.
2. Big pubs do not guarantee instant success
I was fortunate enough to get into a couple of big pubs with 100k+ followers. I really thought that I was gonna get skyrocketing success and views.
I was so wrong.
My story published in Better Marketing barely got any views. On the other hand, my ‘live your life on purpose’ article did better in terms of views.
3. Comments over money!
When I saw what my Better Humans’ story earned vs the wonderful comments I got on my short story, I felt greater joy for the people who found my story worthy enough to give such genuine comments.
The happiness of getting connected to readers was the best feeling in the world!
Takeaway
In my month-long experiment, I published my Medium stories in 13 different publications. It was very interesting looking for different publications for different topics. It made the whole game of publishing fun.
I learned that:
- All publications, big and small are good
- There is no surety of success.
- Readers commenting on your stories is the greatest feeling as a writer.
